Young Ladies of New York Gossip, I mean, Literary Society

“I’m going to die alone.”

“Stop being dramatic.”

“But, the Duke’s son and the banker’s daughter? Engaged?”

“Yes, it’s to be the big announcement at the party on Friday.”

“I don’t believe it.”

“Darling, I’ve heard it from three different sources.”

“No, I mean, I won’t believe it. He can’t be engaged to that awful, little fruitcake.”

“She’s taller than you.”

“Then, that awful, giant fruitcake!”

“I agree. She doesn’t deserve him.”

“All of you need to get over it. He might be handsome and set to inherit his father’s title, but you should hear what they say about him over in Britain. There’s a reason he came here to find a wife.”

“Doesn’t change how he looks in a waistcoat with his shirt sleeves rolled up.”

“Scandalous! When did you see him in just a waistcoat?”

“It’s not fair. I’m going to die alone and it’s her fault.”
